Robert ‘Bob’ Lewis Moore, Jr. is a native Roman, born in a back bedroom of a house on North 5th Avenue on June 16, 1938. His father, Robert T. Moore, Sr. started Bob’s Cycle Shop in the 1930’s and Bob was raised with bicycles and motorcycles in his blood. Bob delivered his Rome News Tribune paper route first on bicycle and then on his motorcycle. He graduated from Rome High School in 1956 and attended West Georgia College. While attending West Georgia College Bob met Peggy Holland, the love of his life, and they married in 1963. They have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. After serving in the Army Reserve he worked at General Motors in Doraville and the GE plant here in Rome until he retired.

When Bob’s father died in 1971, Bob took over Bob’s Cycle Shop and ran it on a part-time basis while he still worked at GE. During his years at the shop, he had a positive influence on kids in our area and he traveled all over the U. S. with his BMX racing teams. Along the way, two of his team,Harry Brock and Trey Smith won National Championship titles.

He always encouraged fair play and good sportsmanship to the kids he was around. Bicycle safety was always a concern and he went to the schools to give safety clinics. Over the years, Bob attended many meetings promoting and securing trails for bikes and pedestrians and has made many donations to these causes. When Bob owned Bob’s cycle Shop, he never missed being in the Christmas Parade and always invited all children to ride with him and required them to wear helmets.

For his great love for Rome and his selfless commitment to our youth, we are proud to honor Bob Moore as our 2009 Grand Marshal.
